The Wife and I are going on a cruise in January to Cozmel, Belieze, Roatan
in Honduras, and Cancun. In that order.
What 1 day excursions or activities do ya'll reccommend in each of these
places? All comments considered.

Thanks in advance,
Don and Kathy

I've not cruised, nor have I been to Honduras or Cancun (except the
airport). I'd advise diving or snorkeling as many places as possible,
particularly in Cozumel. In Belize, possibly do Mayan sites. I
understand Honduras is also good for diving and that Cancun is good
for the beach.

You might ask on the cruising newsgroup.

If you want to do something beside shop and drink in Cozumel, go to
Chankanaab park. Very nice beach, snorkeling and a dolphin encounter if
you're interested in that.

Are you sure you're stopping in Cancun? I don't remember any cruise ships
stopping there. They usually stop down at Playa Del Carmen / Calica. Not
much to do there except take a taxi to Playa and shop/drink.

A 'good' return to your slip is one from which you can walk away. A 'great'
return is one after which they can use the boat again.

Roatan Honduras- about all there would be to do there is to drink
furiously or enjoy the reef. The cruise ship set winds up on the West
End in snorkel tour packages. They seem to have positive experiences.

You can arrange with Anthony's Key Resort (AKR) to visit their "dolphin
experience", the snorkeling version of it allows for much greater
interaction than the SCUBA version.

If you are a SCUBA diver, I would suggest either the Dixon Cove Shark
Dive or AKR for a general dive. My favorite place in Roatan for SCUBA
and snorkel is CoCoView, but this is not simple to get to in the limited
amount of time you'll have. Hard core divers do manage to do this,
however.

For a completely different experience.... Dash off the pier, get a
driver and tell him that you want to hire him for the day and go to Oak
Ridge for a water taxi mangrove tour. This involves sun screen, mosquito
repellant and mass quantities of Salva Vida Beer (at 80 cents a bottle).
The whole day might cost 2 people maybe $70.

In the main town in Roatan which is Coxen Hole, there are many gift
shops of limited stock and quality. A lot of the material is Guatemalan
import, especialy if you shop on West Bay Beach area. In town there is a
large grocery store where you can buy vanilla, Flor de Cana rum,
coffeee, bulk pack cinnamon, etc. Upstairs there are good t shirts
cheap! Look for Honduran crafts of wood and carvings. The chairs are a
delight.

Have your insect repellant with you and use it. All of the Caribbean
Islands have sand fleas (aka no-see-ums) but the Western Caribbean (from
San Andres to Belize) have the best sand fleas, the mother of all of
them lives in Roatan on the Bay Islands.

Have fun.

In Cozumel, DO NOT go on the "Catch The Wave" snorkel and scuba catamaran
adventure!!! It is a big rip off!!! Go to Chankanaab park, that is the place
to see!!!
