If you are staying at a hotel ask at the desk. Its likely to not
be a pub in a run down looking area full of "lads" just after
closing time.

I may be over suspicious but there is a possibility that was one
of the response hoped for? Apols to OP if it wasnt.
I've never been there myself, no doubt it has something to
commend it,but it hardly sounds a likely holiday destination,
although no doubt its not far from some good walking country like
the north york moors. In fact York would be a more likely
destination.

Why do posts in this forum have to be about holiday destinations. I thought
it was about travel in Europe. Does that not include places which aren't
traditional tourist areas?

It's appalling and, when I was last there, smelled badly thanks to the
colossal chemical works across the river.
True though, as in most parts of the North, there is beautiful countryside
within a very short drive.
But, as you say, I wouldn't start from Middlesbrough!

on Saturday when Newcastle are playing there.

It does have a museum devoted to Captain James Cook that may be worth
a visit while waiting for a train to somewhere else (I think you have
to change there to get to Whitby, for example).
A museum celebrating its twinning links with Minamata might be more
appropriate though.
The OP seems to have an interesting approach to deciding what places

Stay away from the area between the railway lines and the
river, its not called 'over the border' for nothing
Some of the council estates are a bit iffy too but you
arent likley to end up on Easterside or Netherfields

The Museum is a fair way out of town in Stuart Park
though. You have a 30 minute bs ride to get there.
