Default Tickets on US Airways

We had e-tickets on US Airways for a July cruise from NYC that we had to
cancel due to health reasons.
Since these tickets were not covered by the travel insurance we figured to
use them later and pay the reticketing fee whenever we could book another
cruise.

If US Airways goes under ( and things do not look too good right now) will
these tickets be worth anything,
Do we have any options right now (still can not plan any travel yet due to
health issues)

Thanks in advance,
George

I have e-tickets on US Air for the end of oct. Yesterday Ray suggested
that I use the tickets for something sooner and purchase new tickets
on another airline for our cruise. My husband spoke to the travel
department at his job, we bought our tickets thru them. The gal was
going to check and get back to us very soon. We don't have the time to
use our tickets in the near future and at this point I don't know what
we are going to do.

Hope your health issues improve very soon.

I wonder if you could donate tickets to one of those agency that fly sick
children to Disney or Hospitals if YOU can't get around to using them,
something like donating your air miles etc.?

Going into bankruptcy often doesn't have much impact on
customers of airlines. US Airways is too big, and owns too
much of the Northeast US airline business to "go under."
Worst case, practically-speaking, it will be bought-out and
the buyer will have to assume all of US Airway's
liabilities.

Your ticket may or may not be one of those liabilities
though. Non-refundable tickets, for example, wouldn't be
worth much, after the original intended date-of-travel.
Also, certain voucher-type tickets are not valid should
there be a change in ownership.

If I had a dollar for every time someone claimed that US Airways was going
bankrupt and might have to shut down I would be able to buy my own plane.
Most of this talk usually happens around the time when union contracts are
being renegotiated.

That's not to say that US Air won't cease operations in but I would be very
surprised if they did. Filing bankruptcy and ceasing operations are two
different things.

But I could be wrong.

I tend to think it won't happen, 50-50 odds, but it is very possible
that US Air could go out of business and be liquidated. It *has*
happened in the past in the airline industry.

They are trying to get large concessions from the pilots, around 16%.
This talk of shutting down is absolutly related to their drive to get
labor concessions.

It has happened before (airlines ceasing operations). If they declare
bankruptcy this would be their second one, which increases the chances
of a shutdown. I would not want to have US Air tickets right now.

When you buy out of bankruptcy you do so to avoid liabilities.

This morning on the Philly all news radio station, Fred Sherman said
that US Air was not going to declare bankrupcy. He is a senior vice
presiden and economist at Sovereigh Bank. We haven't seen anything on
the net yet, but are keeping our eyes open. I sure hope he is right!!

I expect that either United or USAir will not be around in six months. I do
think there is an arangement whereby when an airline is liquidated, other lines
pull together to honor the tickets. However, don't count on perfect flights or
schedules to meet your timetable.

Hehe. You've got that right!

I can't imagine. Their problems are all tied up in
operating costs. The airline has significant assets, in
terms of routes and terminal slots. Even the staunchest
hands-off government would step in and prevent them from
ceasing operations, as a matter of public interest.

Let's compare all the airlines that have ceased operations
(without some other airline honoring their liabilities and
outstanding tickets) to US Airways.

That's only in case of liquidation. US Airways routes and
terminal slots are too valuable to pass-up as a whole. I
believe any buy-out would only seek to get out of
unfavorable contract conditions, not liabilities to
potential customers.
