Plastic Rain Gutters are GARBAGE
My neighbor has those plastic (PVC) rain gutters. Everytime there is
a heavy rain, they seem to creep apart at the joints. He is not
pleased with them. Several months ago, I went to a local building
supply store to purchase a 10 foot piece for a small shed, so water
dont drip on me above the doorway. The store said they no longer sell
this stuff, because there have been too many complaints. I used steel
gutter instead. So, the other day my neighbor calls and tells me the
was given all the plastic gutters and downspouts removed from a whole
house, and if I wanted a piece, I could have it. I went to look, and
all the gutters were full of 3/4 to 2 inch holes. I said "what the
heck happened to this stuff?". He said that hail balls up to one inch
just blasted right thru the gutters. leaving holes like swiss cheese.
He did get enough pieces to fix his (and it matches). I brought home
a 4 foot piece to put on my garage awning, over my walk in door, but
after seeing the damage, I now understand why the building supply
store does not sell it anymore. I put that little piece above my
door, but from what I have seen, the stuff is garbage !

Re: Plastic Rain Gutters are GARBAGE
Wow, that has not been my experience yet. I put it all along the front of
my house along with the leaf covers. As long as you put in the recommended
number of supports, there should be no problem. I find it hard to believe
that hail would do that to PVC gutters. The stuff must have been very old.
Unless of course you are in a winter climate, perhaps winter can cause it to
become brittle after a while.
Anyhow, thanks for your insights.

Re: Plastic Rain Gutters are GARBAGE
From the far northeast:
Cold does indeed make the vinyl gutters get brittle and I
can see where golf ball sized hail could punch holes in it,
though it's never happened here. The golf ball sized hail,
that is - largest i've ever seen's marble sized. ANYway,
they are the preferred material around here. Light weight,
no paining, never rusts, won't dent, survives the occasional
ice dam without twisting/denting/deforming afterwards, and
mounts/cuts easily when done properly. I have seen a diy
job or two with problems, but that wasn't hte product's
fault.
So, the experience here is positive. It must be a mom &
pop store to have stopped carrying it because of a hail
storm? Just curious.
