Gee, a Caribbean island with diving, snorkeling, beaches, and a tropical
type environment--lemme think...and islands like that in the Caribbean?

Seriously, if you're on a budget, then you might consider St. Thomas. You
won't need a passport (assuming you're a US citizen) and plenty of
inexpensive accommodations.

Is this is the only trip you plan to ever take to the Caribbean for the
rest of your life? Some islands are very different, e.g. volcanic versus
coral. And not every island has the best of everything. So maybe just
concentrate on what you want to do most. All are tropical. All can be
relaxing if you want them to be. And you can go budget on about all of
them, even St. Barts and Anguilla. I suggest you start by buying a Lonely
Planet Eastern Caribbean guide book. It will have all the budget
accommodations. Plus you can get some idea of the variety you have to
choose from.

If you want to "experience everything" the Caribbean offers, have you
considered taking a cruise? You wouldn't get everything, but you
would get a diverse sampling depending on the cruiseline and the
length of the cruise. On many cruises, you can even get SCUBA
certified (PADI), too.

Check out www.oceaniacruises.com They are new, have smaller ships
(600 feet+-, 650 passengers or so), specialize in longer length
cruises -- 10 to 14 days, many times staying overnight in ports
(better the few hours you get with the big lines), and aren't all
that pricey.

If a cruise might be the thing, you'll get more detailed advice in
rec.travel.cruises.

well i was thinking od scuba diving or snorkeling (depends if i get
certified) and maybe some rain forest, and off course beaches...I'm
pretty positive that most islands have some history (im a history
buff)....

you're right im sure i'll visit the caribbean again, but not for a
while....

what does everybody think of the dominican republic esp vs. the virign
islands?

Sorry to say but i don't think a cruise will work at the prices im
looking at...(e.g. if i stay at a marriott or hilton i can us gov't
id)..i started by looking at cruises...but unless they come down in
price (problem is teh dreaded single suplement)

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest Montserrat. There's a
great dive instructor there ('Sea Wolf') who will give you one-
on-one attention, and a whole variety of dive sites, from easy
shallow reefs off the beach [great for night dives] to deep water.
He is an excellent instructor and what you'll learn about bouyancy
control will make your dive career enjoyable not just for you but
for the wildlife and everyone else too.

The live volcano makes life interesting, and there are plenty of
interesting jungle hikes up the mountains. There are non-deluxe
places to stay and it's off the beaten track. Plus, when I was
living there we had maybe a dozen medical students come through
at various times working on projects, having a bit of a sponsored
break. You could contact the Government of Montserrat to speak
to the current Chief Medical Officer to see if they're still into
having med students come through and maybe a couple of hours of
research a day will pay for a month long stay.
