Default Puerto Montt (chile) to Bariloche (Argentina), March 12th 2005

Hola... My wife and I need to get from Puerto Montt to Bariloche on
March 12th and need help finding/considering how to do the trip.

We will be arriving by plane to Puerto Montt on March 11th around 4PM,
so we figured there were no options the night of the 11th. So our only
other day available to make it to Bariloche is March 12th.

We wanted to take the boat/bus combo ( www.crucedelagos.cl) but it
appears they only operate until March 11th. Are there any other
companies that do this (websites)?

We also looked into the bus (www.andesmar.com.ar) but we are unable to
figure out the time table (where is Puerto Montt listed as a departure
point, what is the name of the bus terminal in Puerto Montt).

We also looked into the possibility of flying via LAN Chile, but they
do not offer a flight on either of the days we can go (March 11th,
12th). We are even interested if we can arrange a private flight from
Puerto Montt to Bariloche.

Any help would be appreciated (websites, names/phone numbers, Tourism
contacts, travel agent contacts, etc).

Gracias... Roger

I looked at the Andesmar Web site, and it appears to me that they show only
destinations within Argentina, none in Chile.

As to the boat/bus combo, I would imagine they halt operations in March
because autumn and winter are approaching; I've been on those lakes in good
weather, and it's cold out there.

I would recommend that you post your questions on the Lonely Planet's "Thorn
Tree" Web site, South America "branch." There are some Argentines among the
regular posters there (and sometimes a Chilean or two), so you should get
accurate information.

Good luck!

Hello Roger,

As you will be arriving in Pto Montt in late afternoon, Leave airport exit
door and turn right, walk about 50m to the airport bus, ETM company, big
comfortable blue things that cost 2000pesos p.p for the 15km trip (approx
US$3.50)
I suggest that at the well organised central bus station (on the waterfront
1 km west of city center) you then look around at what is on offer and you
will
not have any problem getting a bus for the next day. The buses go via Osorno
but you do not have to change bus.
After this, go upstairs (at side of the ETM office) to the restaurant and
have a good meal at a reasonable price.

After this, go out of bus stn, turn right and walk along (300m ?) until you
see an Esso fuel stn. on your left in a median strip. Cross the road here
and
you have 2 reasonable priced hotels almost opposite.
If you need other things, there is a supermarket to the left and across the
road from the bus stn and there is a reliable ATM just inside the
supermarket door but it is a busy spot so just to be safe, stand together,
one facing away from the machine. We never had problems adopting this
tactic.

The bus journey to Bariloche takes about 7 hrs in total and there are 2
border controls to go thro'. The bus trip is very picturesque, sit
on the left.
The road is sealed all the way.

The trip by the lakes route means that you have to stay at some place
(forgotten name) overnight. It works out to about US$140 p.p for the trip
according to info given to us in Nov 04.

It is difficult to get a Lanchile flight at holiday time, you have to book
months ahead.

I have some web sites that I can send you shortly if you like, am away from
my list at present.

cheers, philip, Tasmania, Oz..

Hello Roger,

Now I'm home again, some more info for you.

Websites to look at =

www.maporama.com an excellent site but does not yet show many cities in Sth
Am. however, Pto Montt is one that it does show a detailed city map.
The bus stn is on waterside of the highway, between Litto and Lora and is
1km from C.Talca which is the central pedestrian mall.

www.interpatagonia.com very worthy of detailed examination for the whole of
Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia, particularly when you click on any of the
5 regions and then the appropriate city.

www.puertomonttchile.cl a municipal site.

www.sernatur.cl gov't tourist body

www.visitBariloche.com another municipal type site.

I hope this helps.

Cordialmente, philipj, Tasmania, Oz

You may be referring to Puella Chile that you stay overnight. A great spot
Think they are Swiss? Very rustic.
I did this trip and was quite pleased ecept Bariloche seems rather windy
