Quite a while apparently...if you need the finger print check (done if your
spouse was in Canada for more than 6months), then it, according to the RCMP
site, takes more than 150days. I'm not sure if this holds the immigration
process back (ie: they wait until the clearance comes through before
processing the forms), but if someone knew for sure I'd like to know.
Honestly though, if you look around I'm not sure if the 150 day thing is
true. The answers are all extremely inconsistent. I hope for your sake,
and mine I am just being overly pessimistic.

Yes, I also just sent and received a email reply from fingerprint services
and here is the answer I got back:

The application for XXXXXX(birthdate: XXX. XX, 1XXX) has been received into
our database on XXXXDATE.

CFSS processes more than 15,000 criminal record searches each month. The
processing time is currently in excess of one hundred and fifty (150) days
from receipt of an application into our database. Note that processing time
can vary due to incoming workloads.

Once the request has been processed, the result will be forwarded to your
address

Hello,

Is your wife in the United Kingdom?

If so British Police Forces do not provide proof of good character.
However you can get a form from your local police station in the uk,
that searches the police database for any convictions etc and you will
be given a certificate that states what is held about you. It cost about
£10 and took about 2 weeks.

I got my visa last week! (I am so pleased that I am telling the world!)
I am being sponsored by my wife, the whole process from start to finish
took about 6 months.

Good luck and have a great xmas.

Paul

Hello,

According to the RCMP, the application was entered into their database in
early september.

I just emailed them 3 days ago, and received a reply the next day. I guess
since removing their email address from their site, there are less emails to
deal with.

Still doesn't speed up the processing time though by the looks of it.

I guess e-mailing RCMP is the same Catch-22 as faxing the visa post for
status on an application. If personnel have to keep stopping to respond to
status requests, the backlog of work will get worse. It sounds like they
removed their address from their site because they were inundated with
e-mail and it slowed them down considerably.

Trust me, I'm not being critical of people who are subject to that daunting
150 day RCMP estimate - I keep hoping that I won't be asked to join the
queue, but I may end up in the same situation you are now. I was in Canada
for five months (not six) prior to submitting my inland PR application, and
the guide does not list Canada as a country for fingerprint clearance. Now
that the inland backlog has gotten so bad, I've been here for over nine
months.

If I have to endure the same wait you and many others are, I won't be happy
either, especially if it holds up my work permit eligibility. I won't even
drive to the neighborhood shopping center since I'm past my initial three
months of being able to use my U.S. license, and I've been in a situation
where I was offered employment "under the table" but I flatly turned it
down. I have absolutely nothing that will appear on a RCMP record. There
is no way I'm doing anything to jeopardize my PR application, so I'd be even
more frustrated knowing that I was waiting 150 days for a paper that will
have "no record" stamped on it anyway - probably like all of you in the RCMP
backlog are feeling.

If it comes to my having to get a clearance, as long as my case is still
within the quoted time parameter, I don't think e-mailing will give me a
different answer other than "in process" and it would just slow down the
overall system if I asked for a status before the 150 days expired. For a
case that is past the estimate, whether it be CIC or RCMP, it makes perfect
sense to check out the reason for delay, but there's not much you can expect
to hear if you're still within normal processing parameters.

Having said that in general terms, I know you've been struggling for a while
with the long wait on your spousal case, Art, so here's hoping you get your
clearance - and your wife's PR - soon.

I have been in Canada for almost 3 years (on a work visa). I am
intending to submit my inland spousal PR application in June after my
wedding. Presumably I shall need RCMP clearance since I have been here
for so long.

Does anybody know if I can go get my fingerprints taken now and then
simply include the RCMP clearance certificate (or what ever they issue)
in my application or do I have to wait until my case is in progress
before geting my fingerprints taken?

Cheers

You have to include the RCMP clearance certificate with your application
for PR (or at least that's what I did when I sent in my application), if
you are applying for PR based on being married to a Canadian, and you
are applying from within Canada. So, you should request the clearance
ahead of sending in the PR application, though don't get the clearance
too soon ahead, because (I think) that when you send in your PR
application, the police clearance certificates must be less than 6
months old.

BTW, I got an RCMP clearance about 60 days after sending in my
fingerprints in late Sept 2003. Other people have had to wait longer.
An immigration lawyer told me that 60 days is normal, though the RCMP
quotes 150 days.

Thanks Dave,

I shall get my fingerprints taken early next year so the certificate
will only be a couple of months old when I apply for PR in June.

Best wishes

BTW, the RCMP do not charge for the clearance certificate, if it is for
immigration purposes. I sent in a certified check, with my fingerprint
forms, and the RCMP very nicely returned the check with the clearance
statement.
