Default Whoa...down in Mexico...

Hey everyone, I'm new here and while I'm sure someone posted this question in the site, I search and couldn't find an UP TO DATE answer. Someone posted a year and some change ago.

Do you need a passport to get into Mexico / Return?

My fiancee's mother is going to go to Puerto Vallarta with us (we have passports) but is asking. If I recall, you just needed an ID and your birth certificate (before 2007).

Am I right?

Ciao

Normally you would just need a birth certificate and photo id, but these days with things changing so fast in the US I would strongly recommend you have a passport. Not all officers are up to date with the rules and it's quite possible that you could be refused for not having a passport. Personally I would not take the chance.

Cool Re: Whoa...down in Mexico...

Um... OF COURSE YOU NEED A PASSPORT. You might not need one in the US border customs, but do you think that we just let people waltz in and out of our country like it's a open house? No, my friend. She needs a passport and you all need to behave.

How you will be getting there may make a difference. I went on a guided tour bus and no paperwork was required. I did have to go through customs but I did not need a passport.
