Default Calling back home (USA) from Latin America
Before going on vacation to Latin America I suggest to buy a calling card while still in USA. This will allow you to call back USA from any country at much lower cost. I suggest to vist at least few calling card sites to choose the best card for your needs. Here my picks: Nobelcom , Cloncom and Primevote.

It is a good idea, but there are also calling cards here in México and you can even find them cheaper than in the US. However, you need to be aware that if you do not finish them before leaving the country you will loose whatever money they have left.
