Default negotiating customs & immigration at JFK...

I'm hoping someone can give me some help/advice. I need to pick someone up at JFK, due to arrive midweek at 6:45 PM and I'm trying to figure out if it is worth it to drive there to pick him up...we will be en route from Wash. DC to Providence RI and need to meet up with him.

Does anyone have any idea how long on average it takes to clear immigration and customs (terminal 7, British Air)? Whether the traffic around JFK would make it just impossible to negotiate?

The alternative is to have him get to Manhattan and take a train outside the city where we can pick him up. But it seems like the bus to Manhattan, then train out will end up taking hours anyway. Might as well meet him and at least sit in traffic together. Any advice?
