BYPT TR#2 POR: Resort, Mouse Keeping and Busses? What Busses?
TR#2 POR: Resort, Mouse Keeping and Busses? What Busses?
The rest of the TR will be more topically written.
There wasn’t much of a line at check in, but check in was confusing.
Most of the blame lies with me and I hope by writing this, anyone else
who ever has to make these inquiries can do so more efficiently.
If you studied the first TR adequately, you know that I was unable to
get two more nights at POR, so I booked 2 nighst at ASMo. I decide to
ask at check in if two more nights are available. “Eddie” is the poor
CM helping me. My only request had been for a room with a trundle bed.
Here is where I screwed up, I should have asked ALL of the questions
and requests I had first thing, but 10K of meat, a ton of dry ice,
carbon dioxide and incredible heat had cooked my brain. Besides, I was
pretty sure I could already smell the fire pit at Boma. First, I
checked in. Then I asked about the extra nights. He had to make some
calls, but found the rooms—and we wouldn’t have to even switch rooms.
Great! Then, I mentioned that I had already paid a deposit on ASMo and
could it be transferred. More calls. Turns out Eddie says they will
refund the credit card—not apply to my current room. I didn’t think
this sounded right. He called again. Same answer. OK, whatever.
Back at the BYPT waiting for the last two customers, I realize we are
in Magnolia Terrace, which does not have trundle beds. Whoops. I never
even noticed. So I call and I get an abrupt CM who says, “Trundle bed
rooms are ONLY for parties of 5.” Huh? I try again and politely
explain we have had one previously for (only) 3 people. Same answer.
Oh well, I’m at Disney World, right?
Mousekeeping was quite good and generous with the extra towels we
requested. No towel animals, but that doesn’t bother me.
In the last two years, I have seen the overall grounds keeping at all
resorts go downhill. So sad. This was no exception, but not as bad as
CBR last August when the same trash stayed in the plants for days.
Bus Service. *sigh* Herein lies the problem. Now Cathy DID have a
rental car for the trip, but as I am an early riser, I opted to hit
the parks earlier and sometimes stayed later than Cathy and Haley. One
morning I waited 20 minutes for an Epcot bus. Another couple there had
already waited 20 minutes when I arrived. After some discussion, we
hopped a MK bus, then monorail to Epcot. At Epcot after getting a new
DE card (see details in the next TR), I went for a bus to MGM. There
were 4 of us in line. 20 minutes later, a bus FINALLY came to get us.
Two mornings later, I needed to go to Epcot. Waited 30 minutes, gave
up, took bus to MK, then monorail to Epcot. I’m very glad Cathy had a
car as I don’t know how we could have made resort dining ressies using
bus service. Very poor show.
The Good: Not having to switch resorts, loads of extra towels, good
mousekeeping
The Bad: Bus service

It sounds like Disney is cutting back on the buses---fuel costs must
be killing them. You are not the only one complaining about bad bus
service on their latest trips.

Hmm, that doesn't sound too bad to me. I just count on a 30-minute wait
for the bus and more often than not, I enjoy a shorter wait. Now, if
you have experience one-hour waits every time, I'd say that would not be
acceptable.

Dear Rodney,
I consider a 10-20 minute wait to be "expected." The waits I
experienced on this trip were 30 minutes from the time I checked my
watch. It was frustrating to speak to others in the bus shelter who
had already been waiting 20 minutes or more. It seemed the biggest
issue was bus allocation: the morning I was waiting for Epcot, there
were 4 MK and TL buses, 1 DTD, 1 AK, 2 MGM and no Epcot.
The next time, there were 4 buses each Epcot and MGM--none for
anything else.

Yeah, we experience that, too, where it seems that every bus comes by
several times *except* the one we want. For that reason, we often just
take the first bus that comes along. Of course this won't work nowadays
if you have specific dining plans made months in advance.
While I don't doubt people were waiting a long time on a bus, I have
found that people do tend to either exaggerate or simply misjudge time
when waiting around with nothing to do. I know I do this myself. What
might have seemed to people at the stop like having already waited 20
minutes might have just been 8 or 10. of course they could really have
been waiting 20 minutes, but we'll never know. I will say if it were
me, and I was at the 30-minute mark, I'd call someone to complain.

Murphy's law. I'd be disappointed if it didn't work that way.

I agree that many of the wait times are probably exaggerated,
but I have been on buses where there were only two of us on
board. That doesn't make economic sense either.
If Disney would hold their busses at the stops for X number of
minutes, or until they had X number of people on board, they
could probably eliminate much of the complaints. Smaller buses
would probably help for the daytime runs, but there's the ADA
they have to think about, and it's probably not cheap to outfit
a bus for wheelchairs.
(I realize that wouldn't work at the moderates, where there
are multiple bus stops and none of the stops are park specific.)

Actually, the only resort that I know of that only has one bus stop and
does not share with other resorts is AKL. I believe all the others have
either multiple stops within the same resort or share a bus among
multiple resorts. That makes it difficult to justify waiting too long
on more guests. I have noticed that the bus drivers will wait just a
minute if they see guests approaching, but if it's clear, they move on.
I wonder if guests would be more satisfied with a fixed bus schedule
rather than "continuous service, every 20-30 minutes". For example, if
I arrive at the bus stop at 9:37 and the schedule says the MK bus runs
at :05 and :35, then I know I have a nearly 30-minute wait, and i also
know that had I been able to get to the stop a few minutes earlier, I'd
not have had to wait much at all. Of course the schedule would need
some "slack" built-in for traffic, etc., but it might be better for the
guest in the long run. Plus, if a bus arrives early (which if they are
scheduled correctly, they will), then it can sit and wait until the
schedule departure time and thus possibly load more guests.
Probably the worst problem with a fixed schedule would be some really
bad traffic snarls, or problems loading guests in mobility devices (i.e.
several guests to load or problems with the ramp). In these cases, they
could have some "floating" buses at strategic locations ready to fill-in
the routes when a departure time is missed. With this schedule, they
could actually use fewer buses and gather more guests. Of course at
park closing, the schedule would need to be abandoned and all available
buses dispatched, but for daily routes, it could work.

I know that Pop Century has one bus stop -- can't speak for the other
values -- last time I stayed at one was 1990 (other than Pop Century
last winter). And, many of the deluxes (excepting AKL) share buses the
majority of the time...
I sort of think that the moderates get a particularly bad rap about
the buses, perhaps because there are multiple stops at each resort
(other than POFQ, but we'll lump it in with POR for the sake of
argument) - whereas the deluxes have one stop per resort.
Perhaps part of the problem is simply that we've all become accustomed
to certain times of the year being "not crowded" and now with the
"deals" Disney is always offering, there aren't really any "not
crowded" times for people like us here on radp...

Which is why we are going to deploy signage that lists all the busses due at
a particular bus stop along with live ETA data and other cool info. That is

ever succeed...

You mean Disney is going to go 21st century and supply real-time data?

Re: BYPT TR#2 POR: Resort, Mouse Keeping and Busses? What Busses?
Keane,
Yes, that's the intent. The busses are already equipped with GPS and two-way
automation controls. Several bus stops have already been wired (displays not
yet installed) and cameras added. The cameras can detect and count guests,
and the central services system can track all of the busses. There is really
a lot of real time info ready to be sent to these displays (weather, general
event times, closings, etc). But corporate made one big goofy - in their
haste to get the system up they decided to farm some of the work out and I
guess the local kindergarten had a few students available... Maybe by the
4th quarter 2052.
