Default Wow, things must be slow at WDW

I was just checking on a hotel for over the 4th (1st through 5th)
thinking that at this late date I'd probably have to stay off site. To
my surprise, most Disney hotels were available--even hotels that are
normally hard to get such as the Polynesian. The low end was sold out
except for All-Star Sports, the Contemporary was sold out, and the DVC
resorts all seemed to be booked. Otherwise, full choice.

Now to figure out how to get enough time off work to do this.

Fort Wilderness Campsites are full!!

I've got a preferred for that weekend, and trying desparately to
downgrade to a full hookup. Not working. Hopefully at the 5-day mark
somebody will cancel.

I also noticed that there was more availability than I thought there would
be a couple of weeks ago over the 4th. We had reservations for Pop but
upgraded to the French Quarter. Our grandson is going to love it there with
the water slide.

This morning, I tried to get a DVC studio anywhere for 7/1-7/4 due to an
unplanned property management trip I have to make and there wasn't a
studio to be had anywhere for the night of 7/3. I had to switch to the
following week to get a studio at SSR for three nights.

Yes, I noticed that DVC was booked. Probably, that's a demographic
that's less affected by a bad economy and high gas prices because
they've already paid for their rooms.

Nope, no parks at all. Just hangin at the campground. A bunch of us
(DISBoards camping forum) will be watching the 4th fireworks from the
beach at the Fort on the 4th, and having a big potluck/drinking party
in (probably) Loop 900 the evening of the 5th. I will probably head
to DTD on the 4th and watch Wall-E and do a little shopping.

Jack,

Saratoga springs showed up as a Studio on a cash basis on the WDW
website today for the 1st - 4th. (The DVC bucket may be different,
but I thought I'd let you know)

Thanks Carol but I'm not about to pay when I have points that I can use. :-)

SSR studios had availability for the following week so I booked the
three nights starting 7/7. It worked out okay as changing the week only
cost me an additional $30 total in airfare/car rental, mostly due to
flying on Monday instead of Tuesday.

I suspect the high gas prices may start to affect the Mouse as well. Perhaps
people are downsizing their hotels to accomidate the higher fuel charges.

We are going at the end of July and none of the hotels on the monorail
were available.

As time goes on Disney is going to be hurt, like the rest of the
tourism industry, by the ever increasing price of oil. Last year, I
was able to get Southwest fares for about $140 RT from New York. In
looking at Southwest's current fares, the cheapest I am finding is
$129 OW. These increased fares are going to significantly reduce the
people who see a low fare to Orlando and decide to book a trip. I
know so many people who are not taking summer trips, Disney or
anywhere else, because of the price of gas or airfare.

Disney has a quality product and benefits from international tourists
because of the weak dollar, but they are not immune from the decrease
in disposable income that is hurting people from the middle class down.

I agree whole heartedly. As DVC members, it was often the case that
we'd take a quick trip down when an airline offered a deal from the
metro-NY area. Now, there really are not any "deals", so, our number
of trips down will decrease significantly. We may stay longer once we
get there, but we won't be going as often. The problem with that
scenario is that we can only take so much time away from work at once.
Employers seem to prefer a couple of days off at a time spread around
the calendar rather than two straight weeks off at a clip.

As for the weaker dollar, it will impact other markets eventually. Our
weaker dollar is unable to buy as many imported goods with many, MANY
things being made off shore. That topped with the fact that our
disposable income is shrinking, soon the world ecomony will start to
feel some of our downturn.

The upshot MIGHT be that due to the cost of transportation, maybe some
of this "off shore" manufacturing will come back to US.

It does make U.S. exports cheaper and makes vacations here cheaper for
those from other countries.

Well, in the course of the past 2 days, Disney released:

- room only rates for August 3 - September 27
- MYW package rates for the same dates
- Travel Agent rates for August 3-24....

so my guess is that for August and September they needed to discount
to fill some rooms.....
