Vegetarian options at DW?
Is anyone here familiar with vegetarian options at DW? Which places
have veggie dishes? When I was at DL in Tokyo they had one restaurant
with *one* veggie entre.

Every table service restaurant has at least one veggie entree on their menu
and most of the counter service places have something vegetarian friendly
too.

Hi Rob! I'm a vegan, with 14 WDW vegetarian/vegan trips under my belt.
While it does take a little more effort, it's possible to eat well as a
vegetarian at Disney.
If you're not a vegan (in other words, if you eat dairy and eggs) it's
hardly even a challenge - every counter service and every sit-down has
something. For vegans, it takes a bit more creativity, but it's still
totally doable. (I ate WAY too much, as a vegan, on my last trip, LOL.)
First, keep in mind that Disney really wants you to eat, so they'll work
with you as best they can. With few exceptions, the cast members are
generally all very friendly and helpful. At counter-service, just
remember that they can only work with the ingredients they have on hand.
In other words, if you want a grilled cheese sandwich, even though it's
not on the menu, you just might be able to get them to make you one with
the cheese and bun they use for their cheeseburgers. However, if you
have your heart set on tofu, and there's none on the menu, you won't have
any luck. I routinely order the standard chicken salad "minus chicken,
minus cheese, with dressing on the side", and they almost never have a
problem with this.
I do eat a lot of salads, but you can also find veggie burgers, veggie
chili, a handful of interesting sandwiches, and some noodle dishes. (My
current favorite is the vegetarian entree at the Asian station at
Sunshine Seasons, inside the Land pavalion at Epcot.) (See list on
AllEars.net, or e-mail me for more suggestions - just remove "whiskers"
from my e-mail address.)
As for sit-down restaurants, just be sure to speak up. Most of the
restaurants have one vegetarian dish on the menu, but most of my best
meals have been things that were not on the menu - the chef would just
ask me what I like or don't like, and work with me to create something
special.
Before this gets too terribly long, I have two more words of advice: Eat
at Boma, at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. This place is amazing! Except for
the "meat" station, nearly the entire buffet is vegetarian, and a great
deal of it is vegan. But I rarely get to eat from the buffet because the
chefs always bend over backwards to prepare something special for me.
It's far and away my favorite restaurant *anywhere*. My second tip:
smile and be friendly. Disney loves to help those who ask nicely. :-)
Feel free to post or e-mail me with more questions - I can ramble on
about veggie dining at Disney for hours on end.

Excellent! Thanks everyone for the great info, especially you, Kitty.
I'm not vegan although I don't eat eggs (allergic). Is there any
specific restaurant you'd recommend, Kitty, for which I should make a
reservation?
Cheers,
Rob

Well, I'd definitely suggest checking out the menus on AllEars.net,
because everyone has different tastes. Even though you may end up eating
something *not* on the menu, it's a good way to get a general feel for
the restaurants. But I'll be happy to share some of my favorites...
Boma, as I mentioned before, is an absolute must for me - can't rave
about this place enough. Ask for Chef TJ - he'll spoil you rotten!
50's Prime Time (Studios) is a ton of fun. Food isn't exactly gourmet,
but they always seem to go out of their way here to make sure I'm happy.
It's just a very unique dining experience - they literally treat you like
family here. You have to help set the table, and you'll be scolded if
you put your elbows on the table, but if you come with a sense of humor,
you'll have a blast.
Garden Grill (the Land pavilion at Epcot) - lots of fresh veggies here.
This is one place where you should call ahead and speak with a chef.
They'll find you something to eat, even on short notice, but last time I
checked, they really encouraged me to work with a chef in advance, so he
could prepare something special.
California Grill (Contemporary Resort) - very pricey, but I had an
incredible meal here a few years ago. Again, I would try to call ahead
and speak with a chef, but I think you'll find that they are more than
capable of putting together something amazing.
Rose and Crown (UK pavilion at Epcot) - I had a wonderful dish here a
couple of years ago. The menu has since changed, but I really enjoyed my
meal, and would eat here again in a heartbeat.
Kona Cafe (Polynesian Resort) - I usually just get their standard noodle
dish - nothing extraordinary, but I really enjoy it. They seem to be
very occomodating here, though, so I'm sure they will work with you. It's
one of our last-minute standby's - you can often get a ressie on shorter
notice than some of the fancier places, or places in the parks.
Places on my list to try, that I've heard rave "veggie" reviews about:
Artist Point (Wilderness Lodge) - they have a "Potato Chive Potstickers"
dish that is supposed to be to-die-for.
Jiko (Animal Kingdom Lodge) - I've heard nothing but good things about
this place. The only reason I haven't tried it (yet) is an inability to
pull myself away from Boma (which is right next door).
Tusker House (Animal Kingdom) - newly rehabbed, and supposed to have a
menu similar to Boma's.
Wherever you decide to eat, be sure to mention your dietary needs when
you make the ressies. And if you can call the individual restaurants and
ask for a chef (they suggest 72 hours in advance) you'll definitely get
more options. I don't think you'll go hungry anywhere, but if you give
them the extra notice, it will increase your options as it gives them
time to get in ingredients they might not normally have on hand.
Any more questions, just let me know. :-) (See, I told you I can talk
Disney dining for hours and hours and hours...)

Oh gosh... (blushing)... somebody actually heard that?
(I have no idea how I got asked to do a podcast, or how I ever got up the
gumption to actually go through with it!) However, the All About the Mouse
Disney Podcast, in general, is a ton of fun, and very informative!

I don't know, Kitty. After reading all these responses you wrote in this
thread and all the info you put on AllEars, I'm beginning to think that
Bashful name needs to be changed pronto. ;-)

I've never had any difficulty eating well and vegetarian at WDW.
I think you could choose any of the restaurants you think you'll
like for whatever your reasons are, and be pretty confident you'll
have good vegetarian choices.
The counter service places are more limited - in at least one case I
settled for a veggieburger rather than take the time to go someplace
better. I have not visited places that sound like specialty seafood or
steak places - you may not have vegetarian choices at those places.
My favorites are Garden Grill at The Land (fresh home grown veggies) and
Jiko.

You know, Jack, I have been trying to think of an appropriate response to
this that would re-establish my right to the Bashful title, but *any*
response only seems to solidify your case, LOL. All I can say is that I
earned my title, fair and square, with almost two years of quiet lurking
before making my first RADP post.
Just ask anyone who's met me - I'm terribly bashful in person! (Oh
gosh... that implies I've met people... which isn't going to help my case
at all here. Nevermind... going back to my quiet corner in the Tromobian
castle, behind the big fern...

Kitty, I would say that the day isn't all that far off when we can get
you to book a December trip to WDW that coincides with the RADP meets.
We got Peppermint Patty and Kathy & Des to join us last year. And they
are still alive and posting to RADP. :-)
So the time is coming. Maybe not this year. Maybe not next year, but you
will eventually come down and meet the friends you didn't know you have.
And we'll be there waiting for you. :-)

I'm very sad that I don't think I will make my annual December trek to
the World this year. My first grandbaby is due December 24 and I want
to be here in case he or she makes his or her appearance early. By
the way, I already have the child's first trip to WDW planned. It
will be December 2011. It will be 3 that month and still FREE!!!!!!

Congratulations, Patty. You must be counting the days. My birthday
happens to be December 26 so I'm hoping the little guy or gal is two
days late.
We're taking our Grandson on his second trip next January.
Unfortunately, he turns 3 in October so he'll need a pass this time.
We've been having a great time getting him prepped for the trip - he
loves Disney World in Google Earth.

RADP meet, was Vegetarian options at DW?

Well, I don't know whether this will help or hurt my claim to the Bashful
title, but... I've actually been to two Mousefests (2000, and 2003, I
think? Getting old, memory going). I'm so bashful (and short) that not
too many people have any idea that I was ever there, LOL. Believe it or
not, it's actually possible to "hide behind the big fern", even at
Mousefest.
There's a teeny-tiny chance we might make it for 2009. Perhaps you'll
have to try the "Bashful challenge" - see if you can find me in a see of
other Mousefesters, LOL.
(We did actually try to plan our trip this year around Mousefest, but
couldn't get a room - DVC is totally booked solid that week. We were on
four waiting lists, but finally had to admit defeat and plan for a
different week.)
