Sort of OT - Letter from BNY Mellon
Any other stockholders get the letter about data being lost? I called
the Disney Investment service phone number and the recording says that
the letter is indeed valid and shareholders are encouraged to call BNY
Mellon. (The letter was about one box of data being lost in February
and son of a gun wasn't my personal information in that box and could
be compromised! They want us to call with our social security numbers
which makes my kind of leery.)

I haven't received anything like this. I don't understand why they want
SSN's when you call because they should have that info already.

It was an unencrypted backup tape.

Hi Par! Are you doing it? I really wish that Disney had sent this
themselves. It seems kind of weird. First Hannaford, now this. My
son can check my credit report for me whenever I need it checked. I
don't use credit cards anymore (long story - don't ask) so I'll know
immediately if my information's been compromised.

I got it, too, and like you, am a little leary. I mean, I think they
really lost the box, but should we take them up on this offer for
"identity protection"? A part of me thinks it's "the least they can do",
after losing our records, but another part of me doesn't trust them to do
anything at this point. I'm wondering, though - do we really have to
give them our SS number (again), or any information? It's not really
clear what we have to provide, other than that special number they gave
us.
(4.5 million customers?! Ackkk! And some of these people had entire
bank records on these tapes!)
Thanks for asking this! At least it's nice not to be the only one. I
mean, not that I want any other RADPers to go through this, but, you know
what I mean...

I got one. The second of that type of letter in one week. (Up
'till now, I've never gotten one at all.)
I didn't see anything where they want a SSN. They're giving you
2 years of credit monitoring, so just sign up for that. (And I think
the only way BNY Mellon can really identify it's you is by SSN.)
I just can't believe there are still companies like Mellon that
aren't encrypting their offsite tape data...

Take the protection - they're just paying for it. The actual protection
is done by one of the Credit Reporting Agencies (Experian, Equifax,
TransUnion).

The company I work for, SAIC, also had stockholder information on some
of the lost tapes. Luckily, mine wasn't among them. The Privacy Rights
Clearinghouse has a complete chronology of data breaches
<http://www.privacyrights.org/ar/ChronDataBreaches.htm>. To date, the
total number of records containing personal information that have been
breached is 230,454,030.

I found my letter waiting in the mailbox yesterday when I came home from
work. I understand now why they want your SSN. Basically BNY Mellon is
giving affected customers two years of credit monitoring and identiy
theft insurance, but this is provided through a third party that
specializes in these services. BNY Mellon did not give this 3rd party
your SSN; they only gave them a list of valid "activation passkeys" that
identifies people as affected customers. In order for the 3rd party
service to put their "hooks" into your credit bureau records, they wil
need your SSN.

BNY Mellon was a transfer agent when Disney spun off ABC Radio and
merged it with Citadel Broadcasting. They are responsible for the
information being lost. Disney had nothing to do with it on their own.

Re: Sort of OT - Letter from BNY Mellon
My letter offered 24 months of credit monitoring through Experian. After
speaking with Disney verifying the letter, I set up the account using the
activation code given in the letter.
