Beaune France train station location
We will be in Paris in the Fall and are considering an overnighter to
Beaune, which we fell in love with during our prior visit to Paris. I
see the SNCF info on schedules etc, so an overnighter looks do-able.
What I can't sort out is where the Beaune train station is located in
relation to the centre de ville, which is where we want to get to. Can
anyone provide any info? Of even greater assistance would be a good
online map of Beaune, suitable for printing. Thanks in advance!

Re: Beaune France train station location
Steve,
The train station is toward the east from the center of the city. From
the station walk about 10 minutes straight ahead and then bend slightly
left.
For excellent maps go to http://www.viamichelin.com
Under maps put in Beaune and then France below it. Slide the red tab up
and down to zoom out and in. Click on hotels on the left to find a place
to sleep.

Re: Beaune France train station location
It's just outside the 'ring' road that circles the town, where the old walls
used to be. It is on Place de la Gare, just up avenue 8 Septembre, and it's
about 3-400 meters from the city centre.

Re: Beaune France train station location
Or for a map that shows almost every street in Beaune, why not try
http://www.multimap.com/
Just put in city of Beaune, France and then select city 1, there are several
Beaune's and then use the magnifier to zoom right down to street level.
Enjoy your trip, Dan.

One of the values of having a Michelin Red Guide is the city maps, showing
you were things like that are.
In fact the US army printed up copies of the 1939 guides to be used
in the invasion of France. My brother, who was in the Battle of the Bulge,
brought some of his old WWII military maps back to France on a visit.
They were obviously reproductions of Michelin departmental maps. These
older maps showed on each map the location of farm houses and other
structures. So military people knew, over the hill a km to the west were
two farm houses, possibly defended!
Too bad this kind of good military intelligence did not survive down
through time.*

*And ofcourse, the Guides listed the restaurants. Eisenhower particularly
like the Lion d'Or at Bayeux.
We did too It is still there and has been from the 1700.

Very short time/distance for overnight travel. You might think about
daytime TGV.

Hey Earl are you still visiting Barry, your drug dealer pal who's in the
French slammer(only because he's black). Why don't you give the group a
thumbnail sketch of the St. Nazare Prison. Maybe you conduct guided tours?

Re: Beaune France train station location
I wonder if the after hours place, "Le Café Américain" is still there. They
used black cherries in their cocktails that had been steeped in Armanac
and were better then the cocktails. The cherries had big stones so BEWARE!

I doubt an overnight train would be doable. The only schedule involving an
overnight train make you spend three hours in Dijon in the middle of the
night, and only a couple of hours on the night train itself.
There are several direct TGV's from Paris to Beaune that take only a bit
more than 2 hours. If you accept a change of trains in Dijon youy even have
more options.
Beaune would actually be a doable day trip from Paris...

Well, there is a Sunday overnighter 23:54 to 3:47. Still a problem what
to do in Beaune at 4 a.m.

Yes. Although that train, although it runs "overnight", does not have most
of the properties one usually associates with night trains... No sleeping
accomodation. A conventional train that happens to have a late schedule...
Makes a lot more sense to travel by day...

Re: Beaune France train station location
Earl, my first stop was actually www.pagesjaunes.fr and their maps (from
Mappy.com I think). Michelin's Red Guide doesn't show the station, only the
road that leads to it. Michelin is good for some things, but I like the
'yellow pages' for practical info.

My bad, my use of the word "overnighter" refered to the trip itself,
not the train we planned to take. :-0
We plan to grab a morning TGV from Gare Lyon on Day 1, hit Beaune
around noon, mosey to the centre de ville (where we spent a long,
lazy, memorable afternoon last April), check in, mosey back out again,
load up on some vino from the negociants in town, dine, sleep, and
catch the Day 2 morning TGV back to Paris, where we will continue with
our main, Paris-based vacation.
All this info has been very helpful. Merci à tous!
