Default Tips for spending New Year's in New York?

Going to New York City for New Year's. Any tips? We want to avoid Times
Square. It's our first time in NYC during this time of year but not our
first time in the City.

What are some decent alternatives, short of watching the ball drop on the
hotel TV, that don't involve inordinate (smothering) crowds or hefty price
tags (if that's possible)?

Thanks in advance.

That would have been my first tip: Do not go to Times Square to watch
the ball drop. Even if it isn't very cold this year, you'll be waiting
in a big crowd for very little.

There are some halfway decent fireworks in Central Park and Prospect
Park, so you can see those if it isn't too cold.

To be honest with you, what most New Yorkers do on New Year's Eve is
simply hang out with friends and party. If you like drinking, just go
bar-hopping (e.g. in the East Village). You're likely to find friendly
crowds there, and not all the bars will be unbearably mobbed.

If you're not going to participate in the Times Square revelry, why
bother going to NYC on New Years Eve? You're going to be reamed for
hotel room so why not just go another time of year?
