??? - Order of tasks for minor kitchen remodel
I'm planning to do some minor kitchen updates, one step at a time
depending on our financial condition. I plan to:
1) Remove old laminate and doors from all cabinets (they were refaced
once already, 25 years ago, and the laminate is coming off). Replace
some cabinet doors, leave some without doors for display (per episode
122 of QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY *grin*). Paint interiors of
open cabinets.
2) Replace countertop (splurge for solid surface? Get bullnose
laminate?), cooktop and sink; add hood with grease trap over stove
3) Replace floor
The order I was planning to do this was:
1) Do all work on top cabinets
2) Replace countertop, cooktop, sink
3) Do all work on bottom cabinets
4) Replace floor (with sheet vinyl, or splurge for laminate?)
Does this sound like a logical order to do things?
Any advice on:
1) Removing laminate glue without setting house on fire. Can I just
sand the cabinets down with electric sander?
2) Feasibility of using water-based primer/sealer and paint on
interior of cabinets
3) Is it worth getting a solid-surface countertop for a minor
remodel?
Thanks.

I had a solid surface counter top installed in my old home. Complete with
the cool integral deep sink. Looked great. I could never keep the damn thing
clean. Set something on it there was a ring. Sure some elbow grease it would
look great again for a while.
Cleaned out my Ionic Breese in the sink and of course the carbon fines
stained the sink. I was crushed. Straight out of the bottle Simple Green
solved that issue.
Now I have Formica and stainless steel. Never going to go that way again.
Your mileage will very.

May look nice, but after time overything inside will be coated with grease.
Can you afford that much loss of cabinet space by converting it to display?

Do you want to be sanding cabinet faces or painting with counter in place?
I'd consider reversing steps 2 & 3.
